How to write better snippets
Based on Google's own guidance on title links and snippets.
Title
- Give every page a unique, descriptive
<title>— avoid vague text like "Home" or "Profile". - Keep it concise. Google explicitly advises against "unnecessarily long or verbose text" and against repeated or boilerplate titles.
- Don't repeat the same words or phrases — keyword-stuffing a title doesn't help, and it can look spammy to both users and Google.
- If you brand your titles, put the site name only at the start or end, separated by a hyphen, colon or pipe — not scattered throughout.
- Match the page's actual language and content; otherwise Google "may choose a different text as the title link."
Meta description
- Write a unique description for every page — don't reuse the same one across pages.
- Make it "truly descriptive" of the page's content rather than a string of keywords.
- Treat it as a hint, not a command: Google snippets are "primarily created from the page content itself," and Google may show a different snippet depending on the search query.
- To stop Google from generating a snippet at all, or to cap its length, use the
nosnippetormax-snippet:[number]meta tags; usedata-nosnippetto hide specific sections of a page from snippets.
